Ordination Class 2009 Has Many Asian-Born,
Despite Low Percentage of Asian Catholics in United States

WASHINGTON—The ordination class of 2009 claims 11 percent Asian-born men, though the percentage of Asian Catholics in the United States is only three percent. Six percent of the class is from Vietnam and two percent from the Philippines.

The percentage of Hispanics in the class is also 12 percent, though the percentage of Hispanic Catholics is estimated at 34 percent. Five percent of the class is from Mexico and one percent from Colombia.

Three percent are African American, the same percentage as African American Catholics in the United States. The majority of the class, 72 percent, is Caucasian, although Caucasians make up only 58 percent of U.S. Catholics.

Most loving Jesus, today is the anniversary of the day on which, despite my unworthiness and through your goodness, You conferred on me the dignity of the priesthood. You made me not only your minister but the voice of your sublime wisdom as well, and the dispenser of your mysteries. My soul is filled with joy, love, and gratitude for this singular privilege which I have received. At the same time, I am sad and troubled for having so often, and without reason, failed to respond as I ought to your great generosity.

I beg the continual assistance of your infinite goodness which will enable me to accomplish the sublime work for which You have commissioned me. With your light in my mind and your strength in my heart I shall daily dispense in greater abundance the fruits of your redemption to all people. Amen.

The Virgin Mary and the Year for Priests

...The basis of Mary's love for priests is her perfect relationship with the High Priest, Jesus Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews (7:1-7) describes the high priestly dignity of Jesus who is said to be a priest "in the line of Melchizedek," that is, not of the Mosaic priesthood, but rather of a priesthood that will never pass away. After conquering the power of the devil once-for-all on Calvary, Jesus Christ eternally offers that one sacrifice to the Father for the salvation of souls, and the men who are chosen to serve in the priestly class in His Church have the duty to perpetuate that one sacrifice in time by celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Of the many things that priests have to do, it is the most important!...
