I have had the privilege of working closely with seminarians during their internship here in DC for many years now. Just recently, I was observing their fervor in the chapel for morning prayers, their kindness and spirit of service in cooking meals, later noticing one who was on his way to bank to make some deposits, another who was setting the table for lunch with attention to detail, another preparing a talk for an upcoming retreat. Their afternoons are filled with meetings in Parishes, working with our youth programs…day in, day out, getting it done for Christ. Simple, ordinary activities, but done with a joyful and generous spirit, and I must say, very edifying and inspiring to me!

I am a daily Mass attendee at Saints Peter and Paul Church.Father Dave has been the pastor there for as long as I can remember.

It came as a bit of a surprise to find out that our beloved Father Dave was retiring. Surprise, because I didn't think Father ever wanted to leave Sts. Peter and Paul. He is one of the kindest, gentlest, funniest priests we have been blessed to have here in Hawaii. He is also the kind of priest who never judges anyone and has taught his parishioners not to judge others either because as he often reminds us "we don't know the whole story".

Father Dave is really going to be missed at Sts. Peter and Paul church. He loves that parish so much. He often reminds all of us that it is the best parish around. He may be a little biased but Sts. Peter and Paul Church is a very joyful parish and I think it has a lot to do with the pastor who has been at the helm for 16 years.

So I take this opportunity to bid Father Dave a fond aloha but hope to see him around more now that he is retired....and I would also like to say aloha and E komo mai to the new pastor!

Fr. John A. Coleman, SJ, a Jesuit priest of 44 years and prominent American scholar, author and lecturer on numerous topics associated with the Catholic Church and the modern world, will deliver the keynote address at the annual Red Mass of the Diocese of Honolulu. The following is a brief synopsis of Fr. Coleman’s subject:

The relationship between American law and faith has long been a subject of controversy. Some secularists insist on a rigid separation. In their view, the state must remain totally neutral in all matters of faith. Some people who are religious feel that an overly dogmatic separation of church and state can, in fact, actually impede the free exercise of a religion which is concerned about the faith that does justice. They fear that rigid separation of faith and the state can degenerate into a separation of faith even from civil society, as if persons of faith lack ordinary citizen’s rights to critique or push for policies in relation to the common good of society. Others believe that some of the most important tenets of American law have religious roots and is enriched when it engages matters of faith. How to understand our precious first amendment in ways that relate law and faith in positive ways, while respecting the state’s role to promote all citizens’ (religious or not) rights and duties? How do or should sacred and secular law intersect?

Fr. Coleman, armed with a licentiate in theology and doctorate in sociology, has taught courses in social theory, American religion and culture, Catholic social teaching, politics, ethics, globalization and more in educational institutions across the United States and around the world. A sought-after speaker, Fr. Coleman has delivered countless lectures in universities and other prominent settings on topics ranging from globalism to spirituality to ministry to gays and lesbians. Member of numerous boards, commissions, and the recipient of multiple academic honors, Fr. Every Catholic Church is busier than it has always been before Advent and Christmas. The Third Edition of the Roman Missal will be in full implementation at the First Sunday of Advent.

A Priest's One Necessary Sermon

The Lamb who is adored in the glory of heaven is present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar here on earth. If a priest were to preach but one sermon from the day of his Ordination until his death, that one sermon could be this: Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi; Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who taketh away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

Disappear Into Adoration

The priest is but a herald. He announces the presence of the Immolated Lamb, and then annihilates himself in humble adoration. Adoration leads inexorably to self-effacement. The Lamb is exalted; the herald of the Lamb disappears. The Bridegroom shines forth in all His beauty; the friend of the Bridegroom withdraws, content to listen to the sound of his voice.

Farewell and RIP, Msgr. Daniel J. Dever

November 2nd is a special day for priests and those who have been a part of the Catholic educational system in Hawai'i. Because it is All Souls Day, it makes it more special to celebrate the life of a good priest and a good man, Fr. Daniel Dever. On that day also, he would have celebrated in person his 86th birthday. The gathering of the faithful at the 6 p.m. funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace celebrated -- as he probably looked on and was among those present -- his very life, a life well lived.

I didn't know Fr. Dever, but the homily of Fr. Gary Secor gave a wonderful image of what a beautiful priest he was. In a gist, Fr. Dever lived his life not for himself, but truly and wonderfully, for Christ.

Lord Jesus Christ,

and are the succesors of the Apostles
as pastors of souls.

Together with the Pope and under his authority
they have been sent throughout the world
to continue your work.

Help our bishop to teach all members of his diocese,
to sactify them in the truth,
and to give them your nourishment.

Make us obey his teachings and love him

Priesthood Sunday

On the last Sunday of October each year we honor our priests, who have dedicated their lives to Jesus and His bride, the Church, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We cannot receive the Blessed sacrament, Jesus Himself, without our priests. They sanctify us. Through the celebration of the Mass and through the sacraments they form us in faith, and they serve the parishes and larger community in varied ways. Their desire is to help draw us closer to our Lord and to lead us to eternal salvation.

We are asked to support our priests in prayer, to thank God for the gifts of their priesthood, and to encourage future vocations to the priesthood among our families and in our faith community. For their faithful and loving service, we say THANK YOU to our pastors Reverend Gordy Carvalho, our parochial vicar Reverend Edmund Barut, our sacramental priests Father Paul Smith and Father Joe Grimaldi.

To this we the Spiritual Moms would add...all the priests in the Diocese of Honolulu and all the priests in the entire world.

Prayer

Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for our faithful priests and bishops,
whose spiritual fatherhood and example of fidelity, self-sacrifice, and devotion
is so vital to the faith of your people.

May our spiritual fathers be guided by the examples of saints Peter and Paul,
all the Apostles, and their saintly successors.
Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all
your people throughout the world.
May the light of your Truth shine through their lives and their good works.

The people went away,
And I came home,

I passed people who were returning from a walk.
I went by the cinema that was disgorging its crowd.
I skirted cafe terraces where tired strollers were trying to prolong
the pleasures of a Sunday holiday.
I bumped into youngsters playing on the footpath,
Youngsters, Lord.
Other people's youngsters who will never be my own.

Here I am Lord,
Alone.
The silence troubles me,
The solitude oppresses me.

Lord, I'm 35 years old,
A body made like others,
ready for work,
A heart meant for love,
But I've given you all.
It's true, of course, that you needed it.
I've given you all, but it's hard Lord.
It's hard to give one's body; it would like to give itself to others.
It's hard to love everyone and claim no one.

Pastor Appreciation Month Coming to an End

Someone tweeted that October was pastor appreciation month. This was news to me and I'm sorry to say that it almost at the end of October that I found out about it. However, as spiritual moms or as parishioners, we can show our appreciation to our pastor/spiritual son at any given day of the year like on his birthday or anniversary of his ordination.

Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs.

We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood.

Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith.

For the Children's Sake, These Stereotypes About Priests Must Stop

“I heard that one of those Catholic popes was molesting children again!” said my mother-in-law’s friend the other day, presumably referring to the news in Kansas City. One isn’t sure where to begin addressing a statement like that. As it turned out, I didn’t have to. She was so busy making comments about how awful “those Catholic popes” are that she didn’t hear any of my attempts to respond.

The conversation was an unfortunate reminder of just how powerful the unbalanced media coverage of scandals involving Catholic clergy has been. I have no objection to even-handed, fact-based news stories about abuse within the Church; the problem is that these stories are reported far more than stories of abuse within other institutions.

Annual Rosary in the Park with a Very Special Guest

Thanks to a lovely and dedicated woman, Josephine and of course, her many assistants, we were blessed to have another wonderful afternoon of Rosary in the Park. This is a local annual event to commemorate Our Lady of Fatima's last apparition on October 13, 1917. This year was extra special as our dear Bishop Larry joined the faithful in honoring our beautiful blessed mother! It was also the first time a shower of blessing (rain) fell while the sun was still shining. It reminded me of what the people must have experienced the day the sun danced.

The gathering started with our bishop leading us in prayer. Then that was followed by the procession around the park. Our Lady's statue was crowned with a beautiful Haku lei and roses. We then chanted the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 p.m. or a little past that time. We prayed the Luminous Mysteries...mostly in the rain and then we renewed our total Consecration (St. Louis de Montfort). The bishop gave his final blessing and we all left...very happy participants in a very joyful event.

2nd Anniversary of Canonization of St. Damien of Moloka'i

Today, the 11th of October 2011, marks the 2nd anniversary of the canonization of St. Damien of Moloka'i.

A Mass in his honor was presided by Bishop Larry Silva, Bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.

A group of pilgrims from Poland is seen in one of the photos. The accompanying priests in the pilgrimage are those at the altar with the bishop. They are Fr. Janusz and Fr. Stanislaw Wojtpwicz.

Deacon John Coughlin is seen reading the gospel and assisting Bishop Larry Silva.

In the last photo is Esther G. receiving Holy Communion.

Two songs composed by Patrick Downes were sang at this Mass. They are The Heart of Damien and Saint Damien.

Study: Most Priests Are Happy, Appreciate Celibacy

Priests in general are among the happiest members of society, says Monsignor Stephen Rossetti, and contrary to secular opinion, most embrace celibacy as a positive aspect of their vocation.

These were some of the conclusions outlined by Monsignor Rossetti in his book, “Why Priests Are Happy” (Ave Maria Press), which will be released Wednesday.

"...The cardinal's poetic address offered a profile of the priest of the 21st century.

'It is right that the priest insert himself in the ordinary life of men, but he must not yield to the conformisms and compromises of society,' he said.

The priest 'is not like 'others.' What people expect from him is, in fact, that he not be 'like others.'"

Cardinal Piacenza said a priest 'will not hesitate to give his life, either in a brief but intense period of generous dedication without limits, or in a daily, long donation in the drop-by-drop progression of humble gestures of service to his people, tending always to the defense and formation of human greatness and of the Christian growth of each of the faithful and of the whole of his people.'

'A priest must be simultaneously little and great, noble in spirit as a king, simple and natural as a peasant,' the Vatican official continued. 'A hero in overcoming himself, sovereign of his desires, a servant of the little ones and weak ones; who is not humbled in face of the powerful, but who bends down to the poor and the little ones, a disciple of his Lord and head of his flock.'

He added, 'No more precious gift can be given to a community than a priest according to the heart of Christ.'

A Meditation for Priests - "Give Me to Drink"

"O Priest, contemplate the crucifix. How often you have looked at your God on the cross and done nothing more. And yet, how many good thoughts could have been suggested by the sight of My suffering?

Recall to your mind the hours of My agony, the hours of Blood and of Redemption...I was nailed to the Cross as a malefactor, I, the Innocent one!

My tormented Body was prey to the most burning fever. One drop of water would have brought a little bid of relief and I begged it: 'I thirst.'

The pious women heard the cry and they would have run to help Me, but this was not permittee them.

My Virgin Mother did not speak nor even make a gesture; her suppliant look was turned upon the guards. One small drop of vinegar mixed with gall was lifted to My lips.

The Creator asks a drop of water from His creatures for whom He gives His life...and it is denied Him!

My plea, 'I thirst,' although it is a demand of nature, is a symbolical cry...It is not the water that I seek...I have a thirst for souls. I have a thirst for love.

Priest of My hear, today I address to you the suffering cry of Golgotha... You know that I am a great Thirster for love, the Beggar for love...a God Who begs. Do I need anything? Am I not happiness itself? Yet, the love that burns within Me drives Me to utter folly.

For was it not this folly of love that made Me assume human flesh, pour out My Blood and remain a Prisoner in the Tabernacle...?

I have chosen you from among millions of men. 'You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you.' You should be grateful and love Me more than anyone else...

From the priest I demand a love that is pure, detached, noble; it would be robbery to deny Me this.

I must reign in your heart, I alone.

I am a jealous God and I cannot allow your love to have any reservations. If any other affections are lodged in your heart, your God will be disturbed. Empty it of all things and I will refill it; the great the emptying, the greater will be the inflow of grace...

Each morning you are wont to say to Me: 'I adore You my God, and I love You with all my heart.' Be attentive. If there reigns in you any other affection that would not be for Me, would this not be a lie?

Eliminate all dis-ordinate affections. Do you not see that such attachments made your heart bleed? I alone bring peace, the true peace that the world cannot give.

Make Me reign in your mind. Think of Me often; I am happy in knowing that you think of Me...The priests who think of Me more frequently are the ones more blessed by Me and hence, are more apostolic.

Your first thought, upon awakening, should be directed to Me. This pleases Me. In the morning make a covenant:'Every beat of my heart will be an act of love.' Believe Me, I will receive these as such and My heart will be touched because this covenant is a sign of fervor. Renew this part throughout the day. As the Holy Virgin to renew it frequently in your name. This is more efficacious for the interior life."

PRACTICE: Throughout the day frequently raise your mind to God.

It matters not if we are able to see those fruits or not; in faith, we know that prayers are powerful in bringing our intentions to God. Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace Celebrates 168th Anniversary

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace celebrates today its 168th anniversary. Fr. John Berger officiates the 12 noon Mass and is joined by more than 300 of its parishioners. Fr. John invites everyone to take part in the restoration project of the cathedral since it needs much repair, being the oldest cathedral in existence that still functions as a full church.

Because today is a weekday, the church celebrated the event in a larger scale this past Sunday, August 14. Also officiated by Fr. John Berger, the Mass at 12 noon of that day was made available through a live webcast at hictv.com. Afterwards, the assembly gathered at the Kamiano Center for fellowship, food and entertainment. Alika Cullen served as the emcee, as usual, and all enjoyed his impromptu manoeuvre for providing a relaxed yet joy-filled atmosphere.

HIVTv is owned and managed by John Fielding, with its grand opening to take place at Damien Memorial School this Thursday, August 18, from 6-9 p.m. All are invited.

Am sure you heard the saying - "Strike the shepherd and scatter the sheep." Therefore, protect our shepherds to protect our sheep. You know who the enemy is. He works amongst us, using us against each other and our priests.

Happy Feast day to each of our wonderful priests. Thank you for your ministry to us. We pray for all those who are sick, retired, lonesome, inactive or fallen as well as those who feel unappreciated.

Divine Savior, Jesus Christ, who have entrusted your work of redemption to the priests, who take your place on earth, I offer you, through the hands of your most holy Mother, for the sanctification of your priests and future priests this whole day, all my prayers, works, joys, sacrifices and sufferings. Give us saintly priests. Grant to them apostolic hearts, filled with love for you and all the souls belonging to you, so that, being themselves sanctified in you, they may sanctify us who are entrusted to their care and bring us safely into Heaven.

Feast of St. Jean Marie Vianney - Patron Saint of Priests

In honor of St. Jean Vianney's feast day, and on behalf of The Spiritual Moms Apostolate in the Diocese of Honolulu, Mass for all the priests in this diocese, Bishop Larry and our holy father, Benedict XVI, was offered. Their Mass was celebrated this morning at 7:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

The Holy Rosary was also offered for their intentions prior to Mass.

It was very fitting that we prayed the Luminous Mysteries today especially as we meditated on the last Luminous Mystery, the Institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. As we know that is when Jesus also instituted the sacrament of Holy Orders.

St. John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests, pray for all our priests, especially our spiritual sons in the Diocese of Honolulu.

The course Code of Canon Law has been integrated into the curriculum of the diaconate formation program of the Diocese of Honolulu. Rev. Mark J. Gantley, who is the pastor of St. John the Baptist Church and St. Agnes Mission of the Diocese of Syracuse in New York, gave the course on the second weekend of the months of April, May, and June at St. Stephen Diocesan Center.

Designed by Fr. Mark himself, the curriculum provides basic concepts foundational to the Code of Canon Law of the Latin Church and other sources of canon law of significance to our diocese. The topics comprise structure, authority and power within the Latin Church, canonical rights and obligations of the Church and the people of God, faculties of the clergy, teaching and sanctifying functions, delicts and penalties, laws governing baptism, and a considerable amount of coverage on laws involving marriage.

Here's what Mike Weaver, one of the men in the deacon formation program has to say: "There is a richness and a depth of beauty in Canon Law that I was not aware of prior to this course. Thanks to Fr. Mark, I believe all of us in the class now see Canon Law as much more than simply a list of regulations and rules to be followed in lock step, but rather as a source of life in the Spirit of our Church."

Rev. Mark J. Gantley was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Syracuse in 1991. He earned his licentiate in canon law (JCL) in 1998 at the Catholic University of America. He has served as a judge on the Tribunal for the Diocese of Syracuse and served for two years (2007-2009) as Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Honolulu. It's been a joy spending time and getting to know better our friend Fr. Daren Zehnle, a young priest and blogger from Springfield, Illinois. The titles he holds in his diocese are Episcopal Master of Ceremonies and Associate Director of the Office for Vocations for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

He comes to Hawai'i every year for retreats and vacations, sometimes twice a year, which will be the case for this year. When he's in town we make it a point to dine with him.

We took him to Bravo Restaurant in Aiea, a perfect place to take priest friends to with its good Italian and American food and family-friendly atmosphere. Esther and I had taken him there three years ago, so we knew that we would have a good time just as we did then.

Esther and I were delighted that Sarah Oldham and her two children, Rachel and Christian, could join us. I came with my daughter Cy, and Esther with her son Joey.

Taking your spiritual son to dinner at a restaurant and inviting him over for lunch or supper at your home are two of the many good things we can do for our spiritual sons. Make sure to go with your family or friends, or have them visit you when your spouse or children are around. Not only is it a family effort, but it is also a way of teaching our children the value of caring for priests.

They say write about what you know! I like to reflect upon the gift of the priesthood. The gift of the priesthood is like any gift that is given, it is appreciated best when it is received with joy! As A priest I find that I am sustained and helped by prayer, not only my own prayer life but the prayers of others. Please say a prayer each day for your own priests in the parishes where you are and also spare one for all priests. I like to see prayers for us priests as a protecting veil that is thrown over the cares and worries of the priest, one that soothes the furrowed brow and lightens the lonesome burdens. Prayer keeps me going in my walk with the Lord and your prayers are always most welcome!

Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace Celebrates 171st Groundbreaking

Today marks the 171st anniversary of the groundbreaking of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

On July 9, 1840, after many years of persecution of the Roman Catholic Church in the Hawaiian Islands, the Hawaiian Government issued Edict of Toleration, paving the way of freedom to religious expression. King Kamehameha III, as an act of reconciliation, granted to the Roman Catholic missionaries a piece of royal estate for the building of its first church on the grounds of Hawai’i. Under the leadership of Apostolic Vicar Etienne Jerome Rouchouze, the Holy Mass was celebrated on that day to coincide with the Feast of Our Lady of Peace, the patroness of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary of which the missionaries were members. Among those who were in attendance were 280 Native Hawaiians who received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and first Holy Eucharist. It was not until August 14, 1840 when the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace would stand and, though she would need more improvements, was consecrated and dedicated.

Today, the Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva, Bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu. It was concelebrated by the Cathedral's pastor, Rev. John Berger, and assisted by Dcn. Clarence DeCaires and Dcn. Keith Galang. The music was provided by Calvin Liu while sacristan service by Jonathan Farinas.

Fighting Back - Attacks on the Priesthood

There should be no doubt left in our minds that the devil has declared war on the Church and is putting all his efforts into destroying her by the ruination of her priests.

Will he succeed? Of course not! But that does not mean we should just let things happen and hope for the best. We must fight back!

The laity can do one of two things:

1. Give up on the Church because we feel we have been betrayed by the fallen priests;

-or-

2. Fight back with all our might, fortified by the strength God will give us and in turn declare war against evil.

We must constantly pray for these fine, yet frail men of God and offer many, many sacrifices on their behalf.

Our priests MUST:

In all humility realize that they will be at the mercy of these continued satanic assaults unless:

1. Get on their knees in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament as often as they can during the day, beginning as soon as the awake. This must be their first priority.

2. Become true sons of Mary by permitting her to guide and protect them by asking for her constant guidance and protection, especially through her most Holy Rosary.

They should totally consecrate themselves to Our Lady and clothe themselves with her Brown Scapular.

3. Be obedient to our holy Father, the Pope, the holy magisterium and their immediate authority, their bishop.

The devil's grip on our priests will be loosened if we fight back together, both priests and laity.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,

...We strongly encourage each and every one of the faithful to begin if not already doing so to pray for our priests, today, this day this very moment, in preparation through prayer, celebration of the Mass and Eucharistic Adoration, so that the 1st July 2011 will be an even greater celebration of the priesthood of Jesus Christ worldwide along with the new Annual Rosary Relay.

In his weekly editorial, the director of the Holy See Press Office recalled that June 29 is the 60th anniversary of Pope Benedict’s priestly ordination and drew attention to the Congregation for the Clergy’s request to bishops’ conferences “to promote celebrations of thanksgiving as well as prayers, centered especially on Eucharistic adoration, for priestly vocations.”

A Prayer for Our Priests

You came from among us
to be, for us, one who serves.
We thank you for ministering Christ to us
and helping us minister Christ to each other.
We are grateful for the many gifts you bring to our community:
for drawing us together in worship,
for visiting us in our homes,
for comforting us in sickness,
for showing us compassion,
for blessing our marriage,
for baptizing our children,
for confirming us in our calling,
for supporting us in bereavement,
for helping us to grow in faith,
for encouraging us to take the initiative,
for helping the whole community realize God's presence among us.
For our part, we pray that we may always be attentive to your needs
and never take you for granted.
You, like us, need friendship and love,
welcome and a sense of belonging,
kind words and acts of thoughtfulness.
We pray, also, for the priests who have wounded priesthood.
May we be willing to forgive
and may they be open to healing.
Let us support one another during times of crisis.
God our Father, we ask you to bless our priests
and confirm them in their calling.
